Apparently, Bibles are evil?

Click here. Isn't that just crazy?

A family in Mount Vernon complained to the school district because an eighth grade science teacher has/had a Bible on his desk. Now that teacher could be put on administrative leave and penalized because he doesn't want to remove the Bible.

I can see a few things wrong with the situation. Now, I know schools aren't supposed to teach religion, and aren't supposed to put one religion ahead of another. I'm not sure if this guy was putting Christianity ahead of, say, Judaism, Buddhism or Islam, at least in his teachings. But, according to basic school rules and what-not, you can't teach the Bible in school. Okay.

Wait a second: I read Genesis during my senior year of high school, in class, as part of a Literature Classics series, or something like that. I don't remember anybody complaining then.

Any way. Here are a few things wrong with the situation the teacher finds himself in.

1. If he was reading Harry Potter, or a Stephen King book, or "How To Save Your Marriage Before It Starts," would he be in the same position? If "Duma Key" was laying on his desk, would anyone have said anything? Further more, if they did, what would the district have done? Nothing.

2. I saw a comment on that story about how schools teach evolution, which would be "offensive" to any Christian, right? But if I walk out of a class and tell a superintendent that I can't study that book because it teaches evolution, I'm be bum out of luck.

3. What kind of message is this sending to people, and more importantly, children? Don't read the Bible or you'll get in trouble? Is the Mount Vernon School District conspiring to send people to Hell? (Okay. Maybe a bit harsh. But still.)

4. The Bible is the best science/history book there is. And schools aren't allowed to teach from it, even for historical purposes. Nuts.

5. I've run out of steam by now. Sorry. Maybe you have your own opinions?
